UNFI Strike Update

The Tacoma Food Cooperative (TFC) is made up of member-owners just like you who are committed to social justice, including the rights of workers. This is an essential reason why we founded our co-op, and one of the things that makes our store a unique, responsible place to shop in Tacoma.

The teamsters’ strike against United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) has brought to light unfair labor practices at UNFI, and poses the question of where TFC stands.

UNFI provides a majority of the non-local products available at TFC, products that are a large share of our business, and which are vital to the continued existence of our co-op.

Being a young and small co-op, TFC cannot effect massive change in the food supply chain on its own. As a co-op amongst co-ops, however, we can support Puget Consumers’ Co-op (PCC), the Olympia Food Co-op, and other regional cooperatives in finding the best way forward.

Until then the TFC board of directors and general manager are staying abreast of new developments, and appreciate member-owner feedback on the topic during our scheduled time for member-owner input at the monthly board meeting.

The strike may have an effect on a variety of items available at TFC. Fresh produce and local items will mostly be unaffected since we buy from many local suppliers.
