The public and our over 800 member-owners are encouraged to pre-order their fresh holiday turkey for Thanksgiving with us. The community can use our online pre-order form to order their turkey for $10.00. Pick up at the co-op is November 19-22.

We have many turkey options which folks can choose from. We have free range, organic and heritage turkeys in sizes of hens and toms. All of our turkeys are guaranteed fresh. For full details on our turkeys check out the turkey Web page under the “Store” tab.

Fantastic Annnual Meeting; New Board Members Elected

Thanks to all those who came, participated, and ate delicious food at our First Annual Meeting to Celebrate the Store’s Opening. We look forward to our next excuse to bring our community together.

The five new Board members for the 2011-2012 Term are: David Foster, Dawn Quinn, Jennie Agard, Liz Kaster, Philip Cowan. The four current Board members who are continuing from last term are: Rob Moore, Molly Archer, Mandy Landa, and Casandra Gorell.

James Williams and Christopher List, candidates who did not win this year’s election, will be working with the Board on subcommittees. Thanks to all for their inspiring actions and good work!

Co-op Open and Fantastic

We have been occupied getting the co-op open and functional. There is always room for improvement but we have finally successfully open the co-op on August 26.

We had a wonderful show of support at our grand opening. Thanks to all who came. It was a blast. We want to extend a big “thank you” to all our volunteers. Without you, this could not have been possible.

Our Volunteer Coordinators have decided to have our Volunteer Roundups on the second Monday and third Thursday of each month.

We had board candidate nominations which our members nominated. We had a great “Evening with the Candidates” earlier this month. Right now, board elections are going on online, which our members are voting. We will soon have a new board and board president. More on this soon.

Volunteer Roundups

Volunteers are the heart and soul of our co-op. Your co-op needs you! Vicki, Rod, and Sue are our Volunteer Coordinators. They are working with groups of volunteers to train and orient them. If you signed up to volunteer, please attend one of the three Volunteer Roundups at the store (you can RSVP on facebook). If you’re not yet signed up, you can sign up anytime and attend a Roundup. We currently have Roundups scheduled as follows:

Saturday 9/10/11: during grand opening.

Friday 9/12/11: 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Thursday 9/15/11: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.

If you cannot make these dates, let us know and we will schedule more Roundups.

The Tacoma Food Co-op Finds a Home

What do places like Tacoma, Olympia, Portland, Seattle, Bellingham and even Port Townsend have in common? Well, soon they’ll all have a food co-op … a food co-op with an actual physical location! I don’t use exclamation points lightly, but the fact that the Tacoma Food Co-op, literally after years of planning and rallying and pushing, will soon be opening shop inside the old Sixth Ave. Market is very, very exciting. The co-op won’t just be a place where the people of Tacoma can finally find organic and sustainably produced food with ease, regularity and without having to pay out the nose, it will be a community epicenter and a constant reminder of the power of people working together. Coffee Talk Dates Announced!

The dates for our upcoming coffee talks have been announced!
The first hour of each coffee talk will be for people interested in becoming a member and to sign up. The last hour is only for members to learn about how they can help us open our doors and fill out their paper-work. These hours will need to be strictly divided due to the nature of the member only discussion.

“Under a white canopy at Thursday’s Broadway Tacoma Market, I listened to Henri Parren, newly hired General Manager for the Tacoma Food Co-op explain to my co-volunteer and I how to effectively communicate the focus and the agenda of the TFC. The first thing that struck me was Henri’s enthusiasm. As he was speaking and giving us not only the background of the co-op but the future of the venture as well, his face was lit with excitement. Clearly he is a man who believes whole-heartedly in this adventure.?
